Desire is the key. French photographer Fred Goudon presents CINQ, his fifth photo book, which is an extraordinary touching and sensitive piece of work. Of course the title is way more than a simple enumeration. The number five—cinq in the French language—is in many cultures a symbol for the human being, for love, but also for unity, harmony and balance. “This is what I feel when I am working”, explains Goudon. Of course “Five” also stands for the five senses. And one can truly gain the impression that this is a book for all of our senses: You can almost smell the alluring odor of these infatuate men, feel their strong bodies, taste the salt on their skin and hear their sighs … it’s due to Goudon’s unique talent that every single picture is drenched with amazing intimacy.

Choices

I never imagined I would face such a difficult decision. My heart and my soul for once are not in the harmony I have long known. My heart, tricked by the illusion of home, comfort, and love, has revolted against the idea that my soul has been longing for.

A dark December night, a stormy violent weather, and here I am a deformed shadow standing on a crossroad, tormented by the choices I have and battling destiny while waiting for a divine intervention.
Which will it be? Will it be the easy choice, the one my heart craves for. A choice where everything remains the same and everything evolves in a natural and smooth flow. Alternatively, will it be a choice I know I will not regret and I know it will be hard for me to adapt to.

When do we go for the easy choice in life? When can we say that I am willing to overcome the remorse and regret I might have in the future because of my easy choice, and be contempt with what I have already achieved in life? life could be often veiled with illusions of great experiences and great desires… maybe what I might be regretting is but a fiction of my own imagination, one that empoisons by its deepest desires the tormenting battle between soul and heart.

In between spaces

I leave my soul hanging in between spaces, Spaces that I have long adored and cherished, and spaces that I have yet to explore. As a new adventure arises in the horizon, my soul weighed down by a thousand soul and a thousand worry, refuses to leave my land, my home.

As I look around, my soul picks up every memory hidden in every object surrounding me, gasping for every piece of remembrance as if the world around me is collapsing into chaos and oblivion. As I look around, my sight embarks me on a journey in time and space… a journey beyond reality to a time of clarity, to my happy childhood my youth and my innocence. Every object holds in its shape a memory, an idea, a story waiting to be told and remembered. Looking more closely, I realize that what lies in those inanimate beings is not a story nor a memory but a piece of my soul hidden for safekeeping, away from my daily struggles and the chaos surrounding it.

Parting time is near, and as I contemplate the silence in my soul, I wonder when leaving to a new soil and a new path, would I be leaving my soul behind hidden in my childhood objects and my streets, the trees I would play under and the bench where I met my first love. Would I leave my soul standing still as time flows by, awaiting my happy return to where I belong?

Leaving to another realm

It is as if I still have not gotten enough of what is there. My soul reaching for the ultimate is weighed down by thousands of thoughts, memories, and loved faces I thought I would never say goodbye to. As my soul swirls I this mid-space; I wonder what if right now, is all I have; What if tomorrow was another reality, shadowed by another dream illusion; What if what I am missing today is never to come back again. Just as old memories lost in time and space, hang in their small realm of existence waiting for the present souls to come pick them up roses from the gardens of oblivious.
I am leaving to another realm of existence where everything is strange and everything is new. Leaving behind my heart, my soul, and my life; hoping one day to come back to those calm shores and gather the pieces of my existence that were left behind, and regain what was once a happy time.

In life, patience is a great weapon. You carry it through your battles, an armor protecting from all what is beyond our reach. Patience in life has led me to where I am today but what if my tomorrow never comes; What if all I have craved for is but a dream, a subconscious illusion that will never surface? I have searched for love in all its places and alas, I found it in its most native and raw forms, a form yet to be known and a shape yet to be taken. however will this shape complement my heart or will it pass through it leaving nothing but a wound... A scare... A memory from times beyond.

I wish time would stop so I would live in this moment where everything is possible yet nothing is certain so I would build a thousand dreams over a thousand clouds calling this new world Utopia, a world of endless beauty, love and perfection. Nevertheless, this moment is fading away and all we are left with is our consciousness and the ruins of a once glorious Utopia that might or might never regain its golden splendor.

I have seen greatness in my eyes; I have touched the skies and have run with the wind to spaces man has never been before. I have lived a thousand lives and carried a million souls.

Alas All was a dream, a splendid dream from beyond shattered on the shores of reality. Leaving nothing but sorrow and deception for when the eternal light is reached even if for a glimpse, even if it were a dream, all other lights will fade away and lose their magnificent beauty.
This is my story, a story of great expectations and even greater deceptions. And while I carry my sorrow throughout the streets of my childhood, I can’t help but wonder; what about where I am now and what I have accomplished till this very moment?

In the mist of life and its perilous ways, we forget our accomplishments and our winnings, our holy grails and their long journeys. Our life is a ladder of conquests aiming toward an ultimate goal however when this goal fails, why forget the small steps that we overcame fighting toward the greater end; for those accomplishments are what defines us and what makes us in the end proud of what we have fulfilled.

Gilles Marini is a French Actor born in Grasse and raised in Cannes (south of France). It was in Paris where Marini met Fred Goudon, who introduced him to the world of modeling. After fulfilling his military duties, he went to the United States to learn English while working as a model and then as an actor.

He has been seen on the television shows such as Ugly Betty, Dirty Sexy Money, Criminal Minds, Windfall, as well as several daytime dramas, including The Bold and the Beautiful and Passions. His recent film credits include "One and the Other (L'Une et L'Autre)”, “Pirates of the Caribbean 3” and "The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down."

He is most well-known for playing the role of Dante in Sex and the City: The Movie, and his most recent stunning performance in ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” season 8.
Marini will be seen as Vanessa Redgrave’s husband on FX’s Nip Tuck, and ABC’s Brother and Sister next season.

My soul drifts to the old port where the ships in the far horizon would make the night glitter with a thousand light, an enchantment beyond realism only seen in the fictive imagination of a painter’s soul. While my body alone in an empty world ignores the arid reality, transcending to spaces beyond gods and deities; a world of beauty and joy of light and warmth; a world where time is no more and eternity is in the heart of all.

Love is but a state of being that bounds us to one another. That's what a woman once thought while loving her husband. Their love was mutual and they complemented each other even in the simplest of daily routines. In their little bubble the world seemed beautiful, whereas the real world was dark and fearful of the unknown... For the black veil of war holding in its folds the tumors of death is upon the nation.
Here she is at the train station; here she is in the darkness of all darkness where everything that was good in the world came to its end. Here she is, in all her glory of love, hugging her husband embracing him as if there was no tomorrow for deep in her soul, she knew that her love will never be the same again and that the moments that she had long cherished are now the joy of her life and the filling for the vast emptiness in her soul. Days, months and years passed by, and the faithful wife awaited the return of her husband. She waited, knowing that he might never come back; knowing that he might never be the same; knowing that time might have changed her into a different woman. My life is as such, a fear of the dark unknown and a will to prosper in the environment surrounding my existence. While an era ends and a new one begins, we find ourselves perilously hanging in between states, not knowing what will the next act be? And will we be able to succeed in our next experience?

Where are we headed in this lifetime? What are we aiming for? Is it love, a love surpassing all frontiers and all human emotions; or is it wealth and success beyond any imagination; is it an understanding of life itself, of the essence and the mechanism, a contentment of an explorer who just posed his feet on the new world, the virgin land that he has long prayed for; or is it immortality, an escape from death and inexistence which fear cripples our soul and ideas.
Whatever reason is, life is beautiful in its entire splendor and humble in all its sad moments for we are limited by the physical laws of nature and limited by time and mortality itself. Let’s step in the dark path of the unknown and light our way because in the end life wouldn’t be life if we stagnate and lay still in a world of endless motion and unlimited potential.

Friendship versus love

When life fades away and all what we are left with are our thoughts and idea, what remains of love and sadness, of beauty and youth, laughter and tears? Is it love, a love that knew no extend and no boundary; or friendship, a friendship that surpassed the concept of friendship itself forming an eternal bond of fraternity and unconditional love?

On the shores of the sea, where the horizon feels so close and my thoughts feel so free two major themes wander in my head; Friendship and love. And in the presence of both those possibilities, which of them do we choose? Is it love, the painter of life in a million colors, or friendship, the gift of brotherly joy and safety in this lonely and sad world?
Just as the sea melts away in the horizon forming a union and one single core, so does love and friendship in the majority of cases. However what makes love so special? Is it the feeling of belonging and sharing? Or is it the complementarity that fulfills our empty soul and gives us the satisfaction we never had? Is it the feeling of sexual attraction that makes this bond last even if the sexual attraction itself faded away? Nevertheless this breathtaking enigma is volatile and turns to darkness and hate just as day turns to night due to reasons not even worth fighting for. Whereas friendship, this stable environment can sustain the fluctuations of time and bear in it the core of youth and eternal love… which to choose?

What happened to the dreams we used to build on the lakes and in the clouds? They were the joy we filled our life with and the future we wished for. Alas now as we plunge in the emptiness of reality, they never seemed so far away from our grasp and never so illusive for our sight.

I still remember the bench I used to sit on while my soul hovered the skies, building a thousand dream. I still remember the dreams of greatness and perfection, of wealth and great romance stories. I never got bored from this illusive joy and the more I wandered in its alleys and streets, the more I loved every part of the walk for it was the perfection that deep in the darkness of my soul I knew I could never achieve totally.

In the mist of growing up, I forgot the bench and along with it the thousand dreams that were build. Reality became just reality and dreams lost the joy that veiled our harsh reality. What happened to the dreams we built, Are they still waiting for us or did they become ruins of the past that we visit only as tourist to admire the beauties of ancient times; times that are long gone and never to come again.

While in a strange place today, I felt the need to remember the name of a girl whom I knew at school 5 years ago and can’t seem to wrap my tong around it. I kept wondering for a while until I gave up my searche and declared her name lost from my conscious.

I remember the sandy beach where we would lie having nothing but ourselves throughout the night; I remember the moon where our souls would transcend to dance on its surface forgetting senses and embracing the absurdness of ideas; I remember the streets we used to walk on while holding hands and never letting go as if the world was hanging in between our palms; I remember the clouds, the bench, the rose, the lips, the kiss, and the entire world that I saw through your eyes. I dream of a life waiting to happen; a life of wealth and luxury, a life of happiness and satisfaction. I dream of success glory and good earned money. I dream of labels and haute couture of jewelry and high fashion boutiques. We all dream those dreams, the dolce suits and the Louis Vuitton bags, the bulgary jewelry and the Prada boots. This marks our success and having those things is a proof that we made it; that we are there and that we are on the right track.

However in the end, is this really what we want? Is this what we need to quench our thirst and appease our loneliness? What good could come from all this prestige if we lost everything else on the way…?

And maybe someday you will open your wings wide and fly back to where you already belong, to the beautiful skies above where you will find god and live in eternal peace and joy. Fragile existence

Life is such a fragile fiber of existence. We read about great men that have conquered the world and achieved the unachievable and while in the apogee they just fall and perish from existence because of a tiny virus that conquered their body.Before this great reality and before our mortality and the very fragile state of existence I wonder if life is worth all those conquests and achievements or is there something beyond those mortal glories and fading triumphs. Do we live for a higher reason and a higher purpose? Were we made so fragile and week just to be reminded that in the end we are beings of mortality and not gods of all mighty powers or to make us think of the higher reason we are here for?
